KSU's Benyard earns ASUN special teams honor

Nov. 1—Gabriel Benyard was selected as the ASUN Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance against Charleston Southern, the conference announced Monday.

The award marked the first ASUN weekly accolade for Benyard and sixth for Kennesaw State this season.

The sophomore from Ocilla was difficult to tackle last Saturday, as he compiled a team-record 117 punt return yards on four attempts in the Owls' 30-20 win at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Benyard also added one kickoff return for 29 yards before Charleston Southern elected to stop kicking it in his direction.

While on offense, Benyard collected a team-high 61 receiving yards on two receptions. Midway through the second quarter, he connected with quarterback Xavier Shepherd for a 37-yard catch to score his first receiving touchdown of the season.

Eastern Kentucky quarterback Parker McKinney and Central Arkansas running back Darius Hale shared the ASUN's offensive award, while Jacksonville State linebacker Stevonte Tullis was honored on defense and Central Arkansas receiver Myles Butler the top freshman.

Kennesaw State will hit the road Saturday for a nonconference game at No. 15 Tennessee-Martin. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
