KU basketball coach Bill Self's absence was not due to heart attack, KU Health System says

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self walks back to the bench after a timeout during the second half of a game against West Virginia during the 2022-23 season inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Bill Self missed the Kansas Jayhawks' men's basketball game against West Virginia on Thursday due to an undisclosed illness, the university said. Instead of coaching the Kansas basketball team to victory, the coach was at the University of Kansas Health System, being treated after arriving at the emergency department Wednesday night, the health system said.

Despite earlier reports that he had a heart attack, the university health system clarified the coach "did not suffer a heart attack" and is "expected to make a full recovery." Though he is not expected to coach for the remainder of the Big 12 Tournament, according to the school.

Even without the Hall of Fame coach's presence, the Jayhawks secured the victory and will move on to the Big 12 Tournament's semifinals against Iowa State.
