KU football vs. Texas recap: Longhorns win 55-14 against Jayhawks in Big 12 game

LAWRENCE — Kansas football’s 2022 season continued Saturday with a Big 12 Conference matchup at home against Texas.

The Jayhawks came in off of a 43-28 loss on the road against Texas Tech. The Longhorns came in off of a 17-10 loss at home against TCU. Last season, Kansas won 57-56 in overtime against Texas.

Did coach Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks squad top the Longhorns again? Did coach Steve Sarkisian’s Texas squad exact some revenge for the loss against Kansas in 2021? This was senior day for the Jayhawks.

FINAL: Texas 55, Kansas 14

The Jayhawks weren't able to put up any more points, and suffered their latest defeat this season.

Texas scores on a big play

The Longhorns now lead 55-14 with 9:09 left in the fourth quarter after a long touchdown run and the ensuing extra point. Running back Jonathon Brooks scored on a 70-yard scamper. The drive went 75 yards in three plays and took 1:24 off of the clock.

Kansas finds the end zone for a second time

Jalon Daniels threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a 12-yard toss to wide receiver Luke Grimm. After the extra point, Kansas now trails 48-14 with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter. The Jayhawks' drive went 74 yards in four plays and took 0:59 off of the clock, helped along in part by a 55-yard pass from Daniels to wide receiver Quentin Skinner.

Texas scores another touchdown

The Longhorns are in the end zone again. This time running back Jonathon Brooks scored on a three-yard run, and the ensuing extra point gave Texas a 48-7 lead with 11:36 left in the fourth quarter. The drive lasted 5:11 and went 65 yards in 12 plays.

END 3Q: Texas 41, Kansas 7

Kansas scores for the first time

The Jayhawks found the end zone for the first time Saturday with a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jalon Daniels to running back Torry Locklin. The drive went 80 yards in seven plays and took 3:16 off of the clock. Kansas now trails 41-7 with about a couple minutes left in the third quarter.

Texas hits a field goal

The Longhorns are up 41-0 now after a 40-yard field goal. The drive took 10 plays and went 28 yards while taking 4:12 off of the clock. There's 5:16 left in the third quarter.

This Texas drive was set up after Kansas tried to go for it on fourth down around midfield and weren't able to convert. That's seven drives without points for the Jayhawks offensively so far. There's a reason the crowd doesn't have much resemblance to what it was at kickoff.

Texas sees Bijan Robinson reach the end zone once more

Texas running back Bijan Robinson collected his fourth rushing score of the day with a 32-yard carry that reached the end zone with 11:03 left in the third quarter. The drive went 61 yards in five plays and took 1:51 off of the clock. Longhorns lead 38-0.

END 2Q: Texas 31, Kansas 0

Texas drove 60 yards in nine plays and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run by running back Bijan Robinson as time expired in the second quarter. After the extra point, which follow the score on that drive that took 2:07 off of the clock, the Longhorns are up 31-0. Robinson is at 172 yards rushing so far.

Jalon Daniels throws an interception

Another Kansas drive with promise just ended without any points, this time because of an interception thrown by quarterback Jalon Daniels that was picked off by Longhorns linebacker Jaylan Ford. He'd been flirting with this happening with some dangerous throws early. Texas takes over at its own 40 yard line with 2:08 left in the second quarter, up 24-0.

Texas extends its lead

Texas is now up 24-0 with 4:56 left in the second quarter, after a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quinn Ewers to running back Keilan Robinson and the ensuing extra point. The drive went 80 yards in seven plays and took 2:27 off of the clock. This game is in blowout territory now.

Kansas misses a field goal

Faced with a decision of whether or not to go for it on fourth down with one to go at the Texas 12 yard line, Kansas went for it. And on the play, the Jayhawks scored a touchdown. However, a penalty called the score back.

So, Kansas sent out Jacob Borcila for a field goal attempt from 34 yards out. He missed. Texas remains up 17-0 with 7:23 left in the second quarter.

Texas linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey ejected

A hit by Longhorns linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey on Jayhawks quarterback Jalon Daniels early in the second quarter was reviewed for targeting. That was confirmed. So, Tucker-Dorsey has been disqualified.

Texas adds a field goal

A costly penalty that gifted Texas a first down deep in Kansas territory didn't come back to bite the Jayhawks as much as it could have, as they were still able to hold the Longhorns to a field goal. Texas, which had a touchdown called back because of a penalty it would later have itself, connected on a 28-yard field goal attempt to go up 17-0 with 12:18 left in the second quarter. The drive went 46 yards in 11 plays and took 4:40 off of the clock.

END 1Q: Texas 14, Kansas 0

Kansas comes up short on 4th down attempt in Texas territory

The Jayhawks earned their first 1st down of the day on a pass from quarterback Jalon Daniels to wide receiver to Quentin Skinner. Then they crossed the 50 yard line for the first time thanks to running back Devin Neal. But, faced with 4th and 2 at the Texas 42 yard line, a passing play didn't gain enough yards and therefore saw Kansas' drive finish with a turnover on downs.

With 1:58 left in the first quarter, Texas leads 14-0.

Texas extends its lead

The Longhorns are now up 14-0, after another touchdown run by running back Bijan Robinson and the ensuing extra point. This time Robinson's carry was from 17 yards out and capped off a drive that went 28 yards in two plays and took 0:26 off of the clock. Texas, now with 5:33 left in the first quarter, was set up with a quality punt return after Kansas' second punt in as many drives.

Texas scores first

The Longhorns struck first on a two-yard touchdown run by running back Bijan Robinson, who's already up to 41 yards on six attempts. The score capped off a nine-play drive that went 68 yards and took 3:58 off of the clock. After the extra point, Texas leads 7-0 with 7:50 left in the first quarter.

Texas, Kansas trade punts to start

The Longhorns weren't able to drive for any points on their opening drive after starting at their own 25 yard line. After getting to about the Texas 45 yard line, an incomplete pass on third down led to a punt.

The Jayhawks took over at their own 32 yard line but went 3-and-out. Kansas nearly had a big play as Jalon Daniels, starting for the first time since TCU back in early October, almost found wide receiver Quentin Skinner on a deep ball. But Skinner wasn't able to pull it in while diving and the Jayhawks had to punt as well.

With 11:48 left in the first quarter, it's still a 0-0 score.
