Kulick: All treats, no tricks on October events calendar in the Poconos

Wow, October already! Leaf peeper season is here and so is a flurry of activities and events to highlight the season. With schools in full swing and fall sports taking the spotlight in many communities, it is time to take out the October calendar and pencil in some of the "this month only" events ahead. Get ready, there are a lot to choose from!

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you should think about participating in the 1000 Pink Lights Walk, in cooperation with the Lehigh Valley Health Network Foundation, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. (rain date: Oct. 8). The event will be held at the Lehman Community Park off Winona Falls Road. Food, fun, tricky tray and walking for a good cause. More information, call Betty Ann at 973-429-9007.

If you enjoy a walk for a cause, then put Saturday, Oct. 14, on your list as you participate in the 4th Annual Ostomy 5k, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Dansbury Park in East Stroudsburg. The contacts are Gina Day (ginaday2016@gmail.com) and Carla Arnold (carlaarnold@rcn.com). This group supports those with ostomies and works toward education of the general public.

Oct. 14 is also the date of the Pocono Environmental Education Center’s (PEEC) Harvest Fest. Plenty of fun events for the family with a charge of $5 per car. PEEC is located on Emery Road, Dingmans Ferry. For more information, call 570-828-2319.

Oct. 14 is a busy day in the Poconos. Perhaps you would like to take in the Kids Fair being hosted by Rep. Tarah Probst at Akenac Park in Dingmans Ferry. Great information for kids and parents at this fun and educational day. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, contact the representative’s office at 570-4202850.

Turn the calendar one day and take in The Sleepy Hollow Halloween Show: Kit’s Interactive Theatre at the Eastern Monroe Public Library on Oct. 15 beginning at 3 p.m. This program has both kids and adults cast into the show and combines literature, dance, music, imagination and improvisation with humor! The library will follow this up with Halloween Trivia, Halloween and Pop Trivia, on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. This is an adult activity. (Device such as a tablet or smartphone necessary.) For more information, contact the library at 570-421-0800.

Two offerings on Oct. 19, one bringing a shark to the Poconos. The Pocono Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, is presenting a program featuring Shark Tank’s Daymond John at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions Center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 570-421-4433. An evening lecture event is being presented through the Monroe County Historical Association’s Traveling Lecture Series. Hotels and Boarding Houses of the Stroudsburgs will be presented by Edward Flory at the Middle Smithfield Township Community Center located on Milford Road. For more information, call 570-421-7703.

If you love jazz music, then that evening join the community as it supports Bushkill Emergency Corps at their 4th Annual Gala at Shawnee Inn. The event will feature jazz duo Nancy and Spencer Reed as well as classical guitarist Eric Falcao entertaining with live performances. Dinner and dancing round out the evening! Cost: $55 per person/$400 for a table of 8. To reserve seats, call 570-223-1906.

Rounding out the month are two other events. Spooky Days will be held at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Friday, Oct. 27. For more information, call 570-992-6161. And who wouldn’t want to celebrate Halloween night with ghosts? Ghostbusters movie, that is! The movie will be shown at the Eastern Monroe Public Library in Stroudsburg at 6 p.m.

One last adventure to add to your month: Until the end of October, the Stourbridge Line is running Scenic Rail Excursions through the Northern Pocono Mountains. A great way to see all those colors and step back into the past!
