HOLLAND — It seems Holland will soon join Wyoming, Walker and Grandville as part of Kum and Go's move to expand across West Michigan.

The franchise announced it would enter the Michigan market in July 2021, highlighting a set of Grand Rapids-area stores expected to open this year. Several are already operational.

The company has "a widespread presence" across the midwest and western parts of the country, it wrote in a release last year, with over 400 stores in a dozen states.

The location in Holland will redevelop the former Bill Knapp's location at 636 E. 24th St. — currently a converted office building — and will include fueling stations and a retail store.

“We have just over a two-acre site with a proposed gas station with a convenience store,” said Joe Wright, project manager. “There are going to be six pump stations and 12 pumps altogether.”

Wright said, as part of the redevelopment, they'll widen the existing driveways off 24th Street and construct a right-turn only entrance in the northwest corner of the property.

Along with the gas station and convenience store, Wright said, there'll be a sitting area, air pumps and bicycle racks on the property.

“We thought it made sense to expand closer to the western shores, so we look at the roads that carry the most traffic and find sites that are available that we think make sense and are a natural spot to stop and get food and fuel — and this site checked a lot of those boxes,” said Alex Sappingfield, real estate manager for Kum and Go.

The company will now receive direction from the city, file paperwork and can begin the process of applying for permits.
