KVA baseball rosters 3 all-state selections

Jun. 2—HENDERSON — It's no secret that Kerr-Vance Academy produces state championships and stars on the diamond. After a campaign that saw them earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NCISAA Playoffs and a second-place finish in the Coastal Independent Conference, 2023 appeared to be no different.

While the Spartans were unable to bring home the state title, they did produce multiple standouts who earned All-State selections at the 1A level.

Junior Tim Hudson was the metaphorical engine for Kerr-Vance as the ace of the pitching staff and one of the best hitters in their lineup.

On the mound, Hudson pitched to the tune of a 3-0 record with a 2.27 ERA in nine appearances. He tallied a team-high 58 strikeouts in 37 innings, while turning in a no-hitter earlier in the season.

At the plate, he was equally as productive, recording a .360 average over 50 at-bats. Hudson drove in six runs on the year, while finishing with six doubles and one home run.

Two other stars for the Spartans in the form of M.J. Wright and Evan Johnson received the all-state distinction following the 2023 campaign.

Wright led the team at the plate with a .408 average, driving in 12 runs and notching seven doubles on the year. He was successful at putting the ball in play, striking out just five times on the year.

His performance in the field was as impressive as you will see at the high school level, committing just one error in 164 opportunities.

Joining him with a memorable season on offense is freshman Evan Johnson, who assisted with a .375 average in 56 at-bats. He led the roster with 21 hits and tallied eight RBIs and eight doubles.

While the trio of KVA stars headlined the successful campaign in 2023, there are certain to be others that make the leap heading into next season.

All 13 players on the roster are set to return, as the Spartans do not have any graduating seniors.

Another No. 1 overall seed and state title run is certainly possible in Henderson under head coach Mike Rigsbee.
