Ky. Humane Society takes in 100 dogs, cats after deadly floods. Here’s how you can help
The Kentucky Humane Society transported more than 100 dogs and cats from the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter and Floyd County Animal Shelter Saturday.
The animals from the two Eastern Kentucky shelters were up for adoption before the flooding and were moved to help make room for pets displaced or injured by the devastating flooding. Those animals left in Eastern Kentucky will hopefully be reunited with their families.
KHS delivered supplies to the Eastern Kentucky shelters and is also providing financial support to Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter so it can transport additional animals outside the region.
Most of the animals are adjusting well, Kat Rooks, Kentucky initiative director for KHS, said. Rooks led the transport process.
“All the animals, for the most part, are doing well. We had some kittens come in who were sick. That’s something that’s expected, you know, especially with kittens of that age in a shelter,” Rooks said.
About 12 to 15 kittens have been put on antibiotic treatment after the transport, and Rooks said they are recovering well.
How can you help Ky. animals amid flood relief efforts?
“Adopting and fostering is one of the No. 1 ways folks can help,” Rooks said. “It’s a lot to incorporate 100 new animals in a day, and so we would love to see some of our beautiful dogs and cats go into forever homes or temporary homes as quickly as possible. That’s the goal for all of them.”
People who are interested in fostering can apply online at the Kentucky Humane Society website. KHS provides supplies to foster homes, including food, a leash/collar, litter, crate and preventative medicine.
Foster assignments are an average of two weeks long, KHS says, but can range anywhere from a few months to a few days. Humane society officials are happy to work with foster families’ vacation schedules, the website says.

Those who are interested in adopting a dog or cat can visit an adoption center to meet the animals. You can view adoptable dogs, cats and even horses online.
Cat adoption fees at KHS range from $30 to $130, while dog adoption fees range from $100 to $400. Additional county processing fees may apply.
The adoption fees at KHS include spaying/neutering, microchipping and microchip registration, up-to-date vaccinations and more.
“Even if it is not from us, now is a great time to go to your local animal shelter, even if it’s not in Louisville, and bring home a new pet,” Rooks said. “Because it’s summertime, all shelters are full, and we love seeing our great community come together to support us by adopting.”

Donations to Floyd County Animal Shelter can be made through check, and the shelter is also in need of material donations such as kitten and puppy food, cleaning supplies, crates, collars and more.
