Water constantly seeps through the Kyiv metro however, some hydrostops prevent it from entering the stations, Ruslan Kandybor, the director of Kyiv City Transport Infrastructure Department, said in an exclusive interview with NV on Dec 13.

The metro runs through underground tunnels and there are constant problems with groundwater due to rain and oversaturation of the soil. Consequently, there is a constant seepage of water, Kandybor said, adding that the tunnels are equipped with drainage wells and channels, and pumping stations.

"This is the normal operating mode of the metro; it provides for such flooding,” Kandybor said.

“In the event of such emergencies, the metro has hydrostops — doors that provide airtightness and prevent water from entering along the tunnel line or to other stations."

"Such standard construction is provided not only since the times of the Soviet Union, but also in Europe; in all tunnels, it is there."

"Are there any problematic areas in ours? We have different areas, some places where water seeps through. Work is underway on design solutions to rectify these issues from the outside."

The Kyiv City State Administration announced a six-month suspension of train services between Lybidska and Teremky stations on Dec. 8.

Kyiv Metro head Victor Brahinskyi said cracks threatening passenger safety were observed on the tunnel ceiling at Demiivska station.
