Kyler Murray injury update: Workout video shows Arizona Cardinals quarterback doing squats

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon has said that quarterback Kyler Murray has been attacking his rehab and recovery from a torn ACL and meniscus. Two weeks ago, Gannon said Murray was about to take another big step in that process.

“He’s going to start doing some things in the strength room,” Gannon told the NFL Network. “He’s coming along well.”

Murray still has a long way to go, but on Friday he posted a workout video on his Instagram account doing four weighted squats on his surgically repaired right knee with the caption “13 Weeks,” indicating how long it’s been since his surgery.

What does the Kyler Murray workout video mean?

The video comes a day after former Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim appeared on the Green Light podcast with Chris Long and said that Murray “still needs to grow,” adding that film study and paying attention to detail will be a must for the quarterback to improve.

Whether Murray posting the workout video was in response to any of Keim’s comments or not, it shows he is doing everything within his power to make his way back.

Judging from his lower-body weight lifting, it would appear Murray might even be ahead of schedule in his return. Gannon repeatedly has said he will not rush Murray back and has not issued a timeline for what Murray would take the practice field.

The Cardinals officially begin their offseason strength and conditioning program on Tuesday and although Murray isn’t expected to be a full participant, he might surprise everyone. Could that possibly include Murray being ready to play when the 2023 season begins in September? It remains to be seen.

Gannon indicated veteran backup Colt McCoy and fifth-year pro David Blough will share the brunt of the quarterback chores this offseason. That probably won’t change until the Cardinals are convinced Murray is 100% healthy.

“We’ll just tailor-fit what we’re doing with the offense around that guy (McCoy and/or Blough), and then when Kyler gets back in, we’ll tailor-fit the offense around him,” Gannon said. “You know, a system will be in place, you just call it a little bit differently with the guy that’s pulling the trigger.”

Not Kyler Murray's first workout video

This isn't Murray's first post-surgery workout video on Instagram.

In February, the quarterback released a video of him working out six weeks after his surgery. In that video, he was shown riding an exercise bike and doing leg lifts at the Cardinals' practice facility in Tempe.

Social media raved about Murray's progress in that video as well.
