Kyrie Irving opting into $37 million player option to remain with Nets

The 2022 free agency period is set to begin on Thursday evening and the Brooklyn Nets, who originally looked like they were on the brink of a rebuild, will now have both of their superstars in the fold for the 2022-23 season.

Kyrie Irving, who has caused a lot of fuss recently about him possibly leaving Brooklyn and not being able to agree to a deal, will now opt in to his $37 million player option to remain with the Nets. He told The Athletic and The Stadium’s Shams Charania that he will opt in and he will see the Nets in the fall.

Irving only played in 29 games in the 2021-22 season averaging 27.4 points and 5.8 assists as he was unable to play in home games until late in the season due to New York’s vaccination rule. He did not play until Jan. 5 against the Indiana Pacers and he could not play in home games until March 27.

It appears that Irving was unable to find a sign-and-trade partner like he was hoping to do to leave Brooklyn.

As the Nets now head into next season, they have plan to finally have Irving, Kevin Durant, and Ben Simmons all together on the court at the same time. It does seem that this might be their final chance to get it done as the possibility of Irving leaving again in 2023 is on the table.
