Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema broke her foot while running in a marathon over the weekend.

The Democrat shared on Instagram that the accident happened while she was running in a tunnel during a race in Washington state.

"Broke my foot in the tunnel and decided about a mile later that I probably couldn’t help @pandemic_bride to her BQ finish line on a broken foot," she said on Sunday, adding that she went to the hospital to address the injury.

Sinema included a photo of herself at the race and also one of her leg in a cast.

Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon, the race Sinema participated in, has its runners do a portion of the race through a dark tunnel.

The senator was in high spirits following the accident, joking about the situation.

"Good morning to everyone except the tunnel," Sinema said in one post.

Sinema, 44, has competed in other marathons over the years and said in the post that she was excited to soon run in the Boston Marathon with her friends.

Sinema returned to Washington, D.C., on Monday, the Arizona Republic reported. The Washington Examiner reached out to the senator's office for confirmation on the matter but did not immediately hear back.
