Five Leaves Opens by Home Studios in the Merrick Building

Five Leaves, the latest restaurant from Brooklyn-based BrightSide Hospitality group, has opened in an Art Deco–style building on Fountain Avenue in East Hollywood, which also houses the Made Solid leather goods boutique and the There-There gallery and art space. New York design firm Home Studios, which also designed the Bibo Ergo Sum cocktail lounge and the restaurant Gwen, created period-appropriate details befitting of the 1930 Merrick Building.

State Housing Bill Under Consideration

Discussions around the potential zoning impacts of Senate Bill 50 in California are heating up, with the L.A. City Council voting unanimously to reject support of the legislation, which would encourage mid-rise residential construction near mass transit throughout the state. Local critics of SB 50 cite a risk of more market-rate units being built at the expense of protecting affordable housing and with a risk of increased displacement. (Some proponents of the legislation point to anti-density NIMBYism as partially driving opposition.) The senate has through next month to pass SB 50.

Silver Lake Streamline Moderne Building Illegally Demolished

Los Angeles architecture aficionados and Silver Lake community members are outraged at the possibly illegal demolition of 1626 Silver Lake Blvd. The single-story Streamline Moderne structure was built in 1937, according to designers Jaime Rummerfield and Ron Woodson's Save Iconic Architecture Projects Instagram feed. It was the office of structural engineer Eugene Birnbaum, and most recently housed lifestyle boutique Yolk. In demolishing the structure, the current owner may have violated a work permit that allowed the owner to build an addition to the existing building.

2015 Serpentine Pavilion Coming to L.A. and Second Home Announces Hollywood Campus

The 2015 Serpentine Pavilion, designed by SelgasCano, will be on view at the La Brea Tar Pits from June 28 to November 24. London-based Second Home and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are partnering to bring the structure to Los Angeles and organize public programming centered around the 866-square-foot fabric-draped installation, which was first exhibited in London's Hyde Park. In addition, Second Home has announced plans to open a permanent L.A. creative campus in Hollywood at the Anne Banning Community House, designed by Madrid’s SelgasCano.
