Nassau County’s top law enforcement official has opened an investigation of Rep.-elect George Santos over the far-reaching lies he’s admitted to peddling during his campaign.

“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-elect Santos are nothing short of stunning,” said Nassau County D.A. Anne Donnelly. “No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

Brooklyn federal prosecutors are also investigating Santos, CBS News reported. They’re checking Santos’ finances, including his financial disclosure filings, the report said.

Santos, 34, admitted to lying about working at Goldman Sachs, graduating from New York University and being Jewish, among a plethora of deceptive statements.

“I’m not going to make excuses for this, but a lot of people overstate in their résumés or twist a little bit or ingratiate themselves,” Santos said earlier this week. “I’m not saying I’m not guilty of that.”

However, Santos, a Republican, has insisted that he won’t give up the seat representing New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which covers eastern Queens and Long Island. If he doesn’t resign, Santos will be sworn in next Tuesday.

Donnelly, also a Republican, implied that she might have something to say about that.

“The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the Third District must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” she said Wednesday night.

Even fellow Long Island Republican Rep.-elect Nick LaLota wasn’t enthused about Santos taking office, despite his party’s slim majority in the House of Representatives.

“I believe a full investigation by the House Ethics Committee and, if necessary, law enforcement, is required,” LaLota said Tuesday, before Donnelly announced her investigation.

Last week, New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office said it would also review any legal issues surrounding Santos’ lies.

Robert Zimmerman, Santos’ Democratic opponent in the November election, has called on Santos to resign, which would trigger a special election.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the leading candidate to replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House when Republicans take over next week, has not yet commented on the Santos scandal. Neither has his presumed No. 2, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Other congressional Republicans have said they’re disappointed in Santos but stopped short of calling for his resignation. Rep.-elect Anthony D’Esposito, who will also represent part of Nassau County, said Santos must “pursue a path of honesty” in the future.
