La Palma Volcano Forces Evacuations as Lava Flows Through Island

The Cumbre Vieja volcano forced evacuations as it continued to erupt in La Palma on October 13.

On Tuesday, between 700 and 800 people were told to evacuate from Los Llanos de Aridane as lava advanced toward the municipality, bringing the total number of people displaced by the eruption to about 6,800, according to El Pais.

Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported it had detected around 66 fresh earth tremors in the eruption zone on Wednesday, one with a 3.9 magnitude. The ash column reached 3,000 meters high, the IGN said.
