La Palma's Cumbre Vieja Volcano Erupts Following Significant Earthquake
La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano spewed lava and gas following an earthquake on Friday, November 19.
Spain’s National Geographic Institute said that Friday’s volcanic activity included a magnitude-5.1 earthquake, the strongest since eruptions began two months ago on September 19.
This footage, released by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute, shows volcanic activity on Friday.
As of November 15, lava flows have covered more than 1,042 hectares (roughly 4 square miles), and destroyed 2,623 buildings, the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program said.
