La Quinta's Pat Burda finishes 13 shots behind winner but still takes second in SCGA Senior Amateur

He didn’t come close to winning the title because of a runaway performance by the champion, but Jeff Burda of La Quinta produced another fine performance in the Southern California Golf Association’s Senior Amateur Championship this week.

Burda, the winner of the title in 2011 and 2014, finished second in the SCGA championship at Santa Ana Country Club. Burda finished the 54-hole event at 2-under 214, but that was still 13 shots behind winner Tim Hogarth of North Hills.

Hogarth was never threatened in the three-day tournament, opening with an 8-under 64 and following with rounds of 67 and 70 to be the only player in the field to break par all three rounds. Burda shot rounds of 72, 69 and 73 to take second place by one shot over Robert Funk of Canyon Lakes. They were the only players to finish under par for 54 holes.

The SCGA Senior Amateur is open to players 55 and older with a handicap index of 9.4 or less.

For Burda, the second-place finish extends a strong summer of play. In June he won the SCGA Senior Match Play title at the Journey at Pechanga in Temecula. It was the eighth overall SCGA title for Burda, a two-time senior player of the year in the association.
