If Cole Strange's ascension to first-round NFL Draft pick caught you by surprise, you're not alone.

In an interview during the draft featuring Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead, the two were shocked that Strange – a five-year starter on the offensive line at Chattanooga – was taken by the New England Patriots with the 29th pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

"We wasted our time watching him thinking he would be (available) at (pick) 104, maybe!" McVay said on the podium.

Many did not expect Strange to be drafted in the first round. ESPN did not have any video highlights prepared for him when he was selected.

Strange, a Knoxville native, attended Farragut High School before playing at Chattanooga. He was a first-team FCS All-America selection and a three-time All-SoCon honoree.
