A Labor Day Surf Off highlights 12 events happening in Brunswick this week

Labor Day Surf Off

The Oak Island Recreation Department will present its annual Labor Day Surf Off, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 at 16 Place East (by Ocean Crest Pier), Oak Island. The cost for surfers is $40 per person, $30 for additional categories. There are categories for youth, teen, and adults. There also will be a paddleboard race and bodyboard competition. Sandbar lecture series: Stinging Jellies

The Sandbar lecture series presents a talk on "Plentiful stinging Jellies key to healthy ecosystem" with Kristin Holloman-Noe, North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Education Outreach Coordinator. The lecture will be held 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 East Second St., Ocean Isle Beach, free with museum admission. Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series

The Extraordinaires will play from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 for Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series. The concert will be held at the Village Park gazebo, 1791 Queen Anne St. Free.

Shallotte Summerfest concert series

The Brunswick Parks & Recreation Department present Shallotte Summerfest concert series. North Tower Band will perform 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at the Mulberry Park Amphitheater, 123 Mulberry St., Shallotte. Bring a chair or blanket.

Labor Day weekend/cookout on Bald Head Island

This annual celebration is truly one not to miss, beside the chance to feast on burgers and "beachy" fare, there will be corresponding activities and events held all along the island. Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert

Come to the Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert, also known as the Peggy Hughes Concert Series. The Extraordinaires will play R&B, classics, 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Town Center Park, 11 E Second St. Free. This is the last concert of the season.

Franklin Square Gallery will host the 2023 Quilt Show featuring handmade art quilts created by members of the Oak Island Beach Quilters guild, an organization that includes over 90 local quilt artisans. This year, each quilt is being created to represent one of the four “Seasons” and may feature either traditional quilting patterns, like “Maple Leaf” block or “Grandmother’s Flower Garden,” or original, one-of-a-kind patterns created by the individual quilter. Stop by the gallery from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1-2 and Sept. 4. at 130 E. West St. Southport. The quilt show runs through Sept. 23.

Oak Island concert series

The Oak Island "Bands by the Beach" concert series the last one this season will have The Main Event Band will play R&B, soul, beach, country, funk music, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Middleton Park Amphitheater, 102 SE 47th St.

'Sensory Saturday' at Maritime Museum

The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport will present "Sensory Saturday," from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 2 at 204 E. Moore St., Southport. During the program, exhibit lights are dimmed, and all audio is turned off. The craft theme activity will be shell related. Museum volunteers will be on hand to assist as needed. Sensory Saturday is designed for individuals and families with sensory sensitivities or special needs; however, all ages and abilities are welcome. Southport Lions Labor Day Car Show

The Southport Lions will hold a Labor Day Car Show, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 in downtown Southport. The event is open to all cars, trucks and motorcycles. There will be a raffle drawing for a boat. Rock 'n' roll music by DJ Dave. Trophies will be awarded in different categories. Registration is $25, 9 a.m. noon, voting noon-2 p.m. awards and boat raffle 3 p.m. Proceeds benefits Southport Lions Vision programs, community and youth programs. Rain date: Saturday, Sept. 9. Holden Beach Concert Series

The Holden Beach Concert Series welcomes North Tower for the last concert of the season. The band will play beach music from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3 at the pavilion under the Holden Beach bridge. Refreshments available for purchase. Bring a chair or beach towel. Free. 910-842-6488.

Labor Day Sunday Sundown Concert
