Labor union alleges unfair wage practices at Ascent high-rise construction site
About 10 members of a labor union picketed against unfair wage practices Tuesday against Alpine Insulation, a general contractor at Ascent, a high-rise under construction on the lower east side.
“The contractor on site - Alpine Insulation, that's doing the scope of work in metal studs, drywall insulation - they undermine our area standard wages and benefits,” said Jimmy Kroening, a representative from North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters who represents drywallers - amidst shouts, whistles and car honks.
Kroening said Alpine paid non-unionized workers in cash and that they were being paid less than unionized workers. He also added that Alpine has not been responding to their messages inquiring about these practices.
The undermined wages impact about 10 to 25 workers per day, “depending on scheduling,” Kroening said.
The Ascent, a 25-story, 259-unit high rise, will be the tallest mass timber structure in the world and is expected to be completed this summer.
Messages left with Alpine Insulation and New Land Enterprises LLP, the building’s developer, were not returned.
