Lackawanna County candy shop working around the clock for Valentine’s Day

TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— For more than 75 years, a local candy shop in Lackawanna County has been serving delicious treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day is just two weeks away, but at Jon Stopay Candies Factory and Store in Taylor, it’s paired with the smell of chocolate.

28/22 News Reporter Sydney Kostus took a shot at learning the ropes of the local shop, its traditions continuing in the Wyoming Valley Area since the 1940s.

Through decades of hard work and leaving their mark, Jon Stopay takes pride in the old-fashioned way of making candy.

“You don’t see a lot of high-tech machinery. You don’t see machines taking over people. You still have us people feeding chocolate, catching chocolate,” said Donna Ondish.

Office manager and official taste tester Donna Ondish tells us they see a rush in business around Cupid’s holiday with hearts and candy flying off the shelves, but one particular treat always steals the show.

“The peanut butter is our main seller and that’s what people look for,” added Ann Marie Daniel, Candy Maker at Jon Stopay Candies.

The peanut butter chiffon is hand-poured, chilled, and then covered in chocolate to be weighed and wrapped up.

“They’re not exact, you know, and that’s part of the homemade thing. You could see that a lot of time and effort was put into them,” Daniel told 28/22 News.

The Stopay family recipe lives on delivering sweetness and smiles to those who stop by.

“We enjoy working with everybody that’s here, it’s a family business, little, but we get a lot done,” said Daniel.

“We work at a happy place, you know, and we make people happy!” Ondish exclaimed.

Jon Stopay Candies also has a shop in Plains, they’re open for sweets and treats Wednesday through Saturday.
