Ladies and Gentlemen: The Weekend!' 5 things to do while out and about in Springfield

Returning to downtown Springfield this Friday and Saturday is the 15th annual Fat Ass 5K and Street Party for Charity.

The untimed race is open to all athletic levels and includes stops for food, beer and entertainment along the route.

The two-day event will kick off at 5:30 p.m. Friday with a craft beer and cigar festival at Seventh and Washington streets. The festival will include food trucks, prizes and live performances from two local bands.

After Sunset will perform at 5:30 p.m. and The Shenanigans will follow at 9 p.m. Admission to the event is free and a cash bar will be available.

The race begins at the corner of Sixth and Adams streets at 10 a.m. Saturday.

More food, beer, and entertainment will be available during the street party from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Springfield's Off the Wall band will take the stage from noon until 3 p.m. and a prize for the best costume will be awarded. More than 40 charities will benefit from the event.

Registration for the street party can be found on Eventbrite and organizers request a $1 donation. The event is sponsored by Security Bank of Springfield and all proceeds will go to charity.

Cinco De Mayo celebration

Put on your dancing shoes and join the Hispanic women of Springfield for a Cinco De Mayo celebration on Saturday.

The event will take place at Venue on The Curve, 1029 Wabash Ave., from 7 p.m. until midnight. Traditional Mexican food will be for sale. Beardstown musician Banda Kazador will perform.

Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for students with ID. Semi-formal attire is required. Call 217-679-1434 for tickets.

Dessert Theatre Fundraiser

The annual Dessert Theater Fundraiser will return to Chatham Glenwood High School this Friday and Saturday. After a delay because of COVID-19, the event will come back in full force from 7 until 9 p.m. both days.

Performances from the Titan Fever show choir, T-Funk and Fusion Jazz Choir will occur at 7 p.m. both evenings. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and children younger than 5 are free.

Proceeds from the event will help pay for equipment and traveling expenses when the groups perform in competitions throughout the country. Tickets cover dessert snacks and can be purchased at the door.

Mothers Day Luncheon & Tea

Start Sunday right with mom by attending the Village Tea Room's annual Mothers Day tea and luncheon.

The event will take place at the store location, 3301 Robbins Road, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sandwiches, soup or salad, and dessert will be served during the occasion along with unlimited gourmet tea. Live entertainment will be present and surprise special gifts for mom will be distributed during the event.

Admission for adults is $30 and its $15 for kids 10 and younger. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 217-787-3308

Celebrate with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. will celebrate 50 years of service in Springfield during a Sunday event.

Hosted by the Omega Nu Chapter, the event will feature a social hour, dinner and dance at the Northfield Inn and Suites. Semi-formal attire is required and activities will occur from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. The social hour is from 6 to 7 p.m. and dinner will start at 7:30.

The Jaro Howse trio will perform live during the dinner and the dance portion will follow. DJ JD of Springfield will cover music for the dance.
