Lady Cats improve to 12-3 with 2-0 win over Cavegirls

Oct. 1—CARLSBAD — Clovis High's girls got off to a solid start in District 4-5A play on Tuesday, blanking Carlsbad 2-0 to improve to 12-3 for the season.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Ava Crain gave the Lady Wildcats the lead with a goal about midway through the opening stanza, and senior midfielder Caley Adams provided an insurance tally from about 30 yards out near the midway point of the second half.

"We were a little sluggish at the start, but we picked it up in the second half," Lady Cats coach Ray Rodriguez said. "Their keeper (Korrine Bradford) was pretty solid. We had some good runs against them."

Bradford fended off 11 Clovis shots to keep the Cavegirls (7-5-3 overall) in contention until late. Junior Aja Gonzales made four saves for the Lady Cats.

The Lady Cats were slated to visit Hobbs on Saturday, then return to Leon Williams Stadium to take on Roswell High in a 6:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.

Carlsbad 2, Clovis 0 (Tuesday, boys) — The story was just about the opposite in the boys matchup, with Angel Baeza giving the Cavemen (6-8-1) the lead midway through the opening half and Roman Andrews finding the net on what was intended to be a crossing pass early in the second half.

"We're not jelling as a team," Wildcats coach Greg Trujillo said. "We lack a lot of chemistry, and it shows in (how we) play.

"We made some mistakes, but at 2-0 (after Andrews' goal) I felt like we still had a chance."

Clovis (4-9-1) was unable to muster a shot on goal, and was beaten 13-0 in that category. The Cats also had just three corner kicks to seven for Carlsbad.

The boys were to host Hobbs on Saturday before traveling to Roswell High on Tuesday for another district contest.

Lady Rams post tie, Rams fall to Hobbs JV — On Thursday, the Portales High girls earned a 1-1 tie against the Hobbs junior varsity while the boys dropped a 1-0 decision to the Eagles.

Sophomore Kadynce Reeves found the net in the 77th minute to allow the Lady Rams (0-8-2) to escape with a draw. The Lady Eagles scored their goal about midway through the first half.

"I was proud of the team's performance today," PHS girls coach Bonnie Britton said. "They're learning the little things. With time and consistency, they're going to mature into a pretty good soccer team."

In the boys' tilt, Juan Guin Castillo tipped a crossing pass into the goal in the 67th minute, and that proved to be all the Hobbs JV (7-0-3) would need for a 1-0 victory.

"We played good, played hard," PHS boys coach Ruben Tellez said. "It was extremely physical. My team left their hearts out on the field, and just came up short."

Hobbs outshot the Rams 9-2 on goal, with junior Mathew Garcia making eight saves for Portales.

Last Tuesday, the Rams lost their District 4-4A opener 8-1 at Lovington, while the girls were blanked at home 5-0 by Artesia.

The Rams were slated to host Roswell Goddard on Saturday while the girls traveled to Lovington. Tuesday night, the boys visit Artesia while the girls welcome Roswell Goddard on Thursday.
