Lady Chaps put away St. Edward's, run home streak to 97

Allie Schulte and Channing Cunyus scored 11 points apiece and 10th-ranked Lubbock Christian University beat St. Edward's 66-46 Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center, extending its home win streak to 97 games.

Laynee Burr added 10 points for LCU (15-3, 4-2), which dropped in the national polls after a loss last week at Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lady Chaps got seven points and five rebounds from Grace Foster and six points and eight rebounds from Juliana Robertson.

Cunyus scored seven points in the first quarter, helping LCU build a 19-7 lead. The Lady Chaps outscored St. Edward's 21-8 in the third quarter to open up a 54-29 advantage.

St. Edward's (9-8, 2-4) got 10 points from Bella Muscoreil and eight from McCall Hampton. Lauren Catherman from Monterey added six points and a team-high three assists for the Hilltoppers.

LCU is back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday hosting St. Mary's, which went into its game Thursday at Eastern New Mexico with records of 1-12 and 0-2 in conference play. The men's LCU-St. Mary's game on Saturday has been postponed on account of COVID protocols.

Baseball

Tickets are on sale for the College Baseball Foundation's annual First Pitch Luncheon.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday at the Memorial Civic Center with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. and the program beginning at 12:05 p.m. Former Tech all-America third baseman Josh Jung, now of the Texas Rangers, is scheduled to be on the program along with Tech coach Tim Tadlock and Lubbock Christian University coach Nathan Blackwood.

Tables of eight are $500, which includes a meet-and-greet session with Jung and priority seating, or $300 for preferred seating. Individual tickets are $25.

LCU baseball

Lubbock Christian University is picked sixth out of 13 teams in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.

The Chaparrals return most of a roster that finished 23-24 last year after reaching the LSC tournament championship round. LCU opens the season with a four-game home series Feb. 4-6 against Arkansas-Fort Smith. All but two games on the Chaps' 50-game schedule are conference games as they play each of the other 12 LSC teams a four-game series.

Angelo State is picked to repeat as the LSC champion in the vote by the conference's coaches, sports information directors and media. The Rams received 27 of the 36 first-place votes. The rest of the top five are West Texas A&M, UT Tyler, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Oklahoma Christian.

LCU softball

Lubbock Christian University is picked seventh among 16 teams in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll of coaches, sports information directors and media.

The Lady Chaps went 29-17 last season, 17-13 in conference play and finished eighth in the LSC standings. They return starters at every position and top pitcher Taylor Franco.

UT Tyler is picked to defend the conference championship it won last year. The Patriots received 22 of 43 first-place votes. Another 16 first-place votes went to West Texas A&M, which is forecast for second place.

Angelo State, Oklahoma Christian, Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville are the other teams picked ahead of LCU.

The Lady Chaps play a 50-game schedule that includes 20 non-conference games and a doubleheader against each of the other 15 LSC teams. LCU opens the season Feb. 4-6 with six games at the Gulf Shores Invitational in Alabama.

Tech baseball

Texas Tech announced Friday that it has sold out its season tickets for the eighth year in a row, moving more than 2,750.

Single-game ticket sales begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday. They can be bought online at TexasTech.com or by calling (806) 742-8324.

The Red Raiders have 26 home games scheduled, starting with the home opener against Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m. Feb. 22.
