Lady Chaps win, take lead in LSC West

SILVER CITY, N.M. — Grace Foster scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds Thursday night, leading Lubbock Christian University to a 54-40 victory over Western New Mexico in Lone Star Conference women's basketball.

Maci Maddox added 11 points for the Lady Chaps (17-8, 12-5), who took over the LSC West Division lead with its victory and losses by two of its rivals.

In Lawton, Oklahoma, Cameron upset Angelo State 56-54, dealing the Rambelles their second loss in a row. In Portales, New Mexico, Eastern New Mexico upset West Texas A&M 68-62.

Angelo State (19-5, 14-4) continues to lead LCU in the conference standings, but its division record of 9-3 now trails LCU's 9-2. West Texas A&M (18-6, 11-5) also is one-half game behind LCU in the division. At season's end, the East and West division winners receive the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the conference tournament and the remaining seeds are determined by conference record.

LCU plays Eastern New Mexico (12-10, 9-8) at 2 p.m. CST Saturday in Portales. ENMU has won four games in a row.

Susi Namao and Diamond Moore scored 11 points apiece for WNMU (7-14, 5-12).

WNMU men 82, LCU 81

SILVER CITY, N.M. — Jaylin McFadden scored 24 points and Western New Mexico edged Lubbock Christian University, sweeping the Lone Star Conference regular-season series between the two teams.

Tony Avalos added 17 points for WNMU (14-9, 8-9), which beat LCU (16-7, 12-5) four weeks ago in Lubbock 76-67. The Chaparrals had won six in a row since.

Russell Harrison had a chance to tie or win the game for LCU with one second left, going to the free-throw line after a shooting foul. But he missed both sandwiched around a 30-second timeout. That capped a riveting finish that featured five lead changes in the last 2:31, the game's last points coming on a McFadden layup with 1:02 left.

LSC scoring leader Rowan Mackenzie scored 23 points for LCU, followed by Karhan Jones with 15, Kurt Wegscheider and Harrison with 14 apiece and Aaron Gonzales with 10. Jones' 15 points were a career high for the 6-foot-1 sophomore from Arlington Martin.

Wegscheider put the Chaps ahead 79-78 with two free throws, and Najeeb Muhammad gave LCU an 81-80 edge on a basket at the 1:18 mark.

LCU visits Eastern New Mexico (14-9, 9-8) at 4 p.m. CST Saturday.

Wayland women 57

EL RENO, Okla. — Jenna Cooper-Jackson scored 20 points and Wayland Baptist won its fourth game in a row, winning on the road against Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma City University.

Kaitlyn Edgemon had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Flying Queens (16-9, 12-7), who are one-half game behind fourth-place John Brown (18-6, 12-6) in the 12-team SAC. The top four teams host first-round games in the conference tournament.

JBU, which has won six games in a row, hosts WBU at 2 p.m. Saturday in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Cooper-Jackson added seven rebounds and seven assists.

Amaya Gordon scored 18 points for Oklahoma City (11-12, 8-10).

Wayland men 90

EL RENO, Okla. — Tedrick Wolfe scored 25 points, Reece Spencer came off the bench for 20 and Wayland Baptist held off Oklahoma City University for its ninth consecutive victory in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Wayland (19-6, 14-5) last won nine in a row to open the 2004-05 season and also won nine straight during the 1999-2000 and 1992-93 seasons. Those are the Pioneers' longest win streaks since 1990-91, when they won 12 in a row near the end of a 29-4 season under Rick Cooper, now a member of the Texas Tech staff.

Wayland plays at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at John Brown (9-15, 7-11).

Parrish Hewitt had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers. D’Michael Bellfield added 11 points and R.J. Mason 10.

SPC women 67

Howard 39

LEVELLAND — Jennifer Silva and Matilda Soderlund fueled a game-opening 19-point run and South Plains College rolled over Howard College to stay undefeated in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

In the game's first eight minutes-plus, Silva scored seven of her 10 points and Soderlund made two 3-point goals to help the Lady Texans build the 19-0 lead. Soderlund finished with a game-high 15 points.

Isabella Jaramillo and Vitoria Carvalho added nine and eight respectively, for South Plains (14-7, 8-0), which has won 11 of its past 12 games.

Victoria Gonzalez scored 11 for Howard (12-12, 3-6).

SPC men 84

LEVELLAND — Sophomore guard Jaden Harris poured in 27 points, one short of his career high, and South Plains College turned back Howard College at Texan Dome.

Ismail Habib and Malek Abdelgowad added 11 points apiece for South Plains (19-5, 7-3), which remained in third place in the WJCAC, one-half game behind Clarendon College (20-5, 8-3) and one-half game ahead of Midland College (21-4, 17-4).

Trey Fort scored 33 points for Howard (16-8, 6-4), including a 3-point goal that made the score 73-73 with four minutes left. Abdelgowad put South Plains ahead for good on its next trip with a three-point play, and a 3-point goal by Muon Reath made the Texans' lead 79-75 with 1:34 left.

Dontae Horn finished with 20 points for Howard. Jalen McDonald and Reath both chipped in 10 for South Plains.
