Old Dominion hands Lady Raiders first loss

KATY — Ajah Wayne, Mariah Adams and Iggy Allen scored 17, 14 and 12 points, respectively, as Old Dominion beat Texas Tech 59-45 Saturday at the Van Chancellor Classic, dealing the Lady Raiders their first loss of the season.

Old Dominion (4-2) led 37-14 at halftime and held Tech (5-1) to sub-39-percent shooting for the game. The Monarchs built the lead to 43-16 early in the second half, and the closest the Lady Raiders got from then on was 49-41 on two Lexy Hightower free throws with 6:19 left.

Hightower led the Lady Raiders with 13 points. Rhyle McKinney, Brynn Gerlich and Chantae Embry were next with six apiece. Taylah Thomas grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with five points.

Tech takes on New Mexico at 4 p.m. Sunday in the last of its three games in three days at the event. New Mexico was 4-2 going into its game Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Lobos lost their first game of the weekend 71-66 Friday against Stephen F. Austin.

The Lady Raiders beat Ball State 71-67 on Friday with four players scoring in double digits: Thomas with 18 points, Hightower with 15, Ella Tofaeono with 13 and McKinney with 11.

McKinney, Hightower and Thomas are averaging 13.7 points per game, 11.8 and 10.7, respectively.

HONOLULU — Senior guards Allie Schulte and Ashton Duncan scored 22 and 18 points, respectively, and No. 2 Lubbock Christian University beat Hawaii Pacific 73-52 Friday in its second of two games at the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic.

Schulte added six assists, five steals and four rebounds for LCU (8-1), which shot 55 percent in winning its fourth game in a row.

Channing Cunyus and Laynee Burr chipped in nine and eight points, respectively, with four rebounds apiece.

Avery Cargill scored 16 points for Hawaii Pacific (3-2).

Tech volleyball

Logan Eggleston pounded 19 kills and No. 2 Texas hit .328 as the Longhorns beat Texas Tech 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17 in the first of a two-match Big 12 series at United Supermarkets Arena.

Molly Phillips added 10 kills, Skylar Fields eight and Texas (23-1, 14-1) won its fifth match in a row.

Tech (17-11, 7-8) lost for the first time in five matches. The Red Raiders were scheduled to host the Longhorns again Saturday night in a regular-season finale.

Karrington Jones, Kenna Sauer and Reagan Cooper led Tech with 12, 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Alex Kirby racked up 41 assists.
