Lady Demons continue winning streak

Apr. 6—It was a difficult start to the 2023 season, however the Duncan Lady Demons soccer team has continued their current win streak by advancing to four straight wins with a 4-1 victory over district rival Santa Fe South.

Starting the year with an 0-5 record, the Lady Demons have gotten four wins in a row and were selected as the DSPAC Team of the Week after earning their second straight district win of the season.

In the final home game of the season, the Lady Demons didn't waste time. Junior Alyssa Harvey found the goal twice within three minutes of each other to take the 2-0 lead.

Both goals were part of the first of many shots that came within the first 10 minutes of the first half. Another attempt came at the 29:45 mark of the first half.

Freshman Addison Richards got a shot that nearly gave the Lady Demons the 3-0 lead, but the Lady Saints' goalkeeper saved it to keep the game at 2-0 in favor of Duncan.

Almost 20 minutes passed before Duncan got its third goal of the evening. Junior Katelin Ramirez made a few key passes to put her into a great shot opportunity on goal.

Richards got a pass to Adrian Riveros, who then kicked it into Ramirez who got the shot past the Santa Fe South goalkeeper at the 8:27 mark to put the Lady Demons up 3-0 with the first half nearly completed.

The Lady Saints got the benefit of the wind to help them at the three-minute mark of the first half. They were set up for a corner kick to try and end the shutout threat.

Santa Fe's corner kick was ultimately successful as the ball, aided with the wind, flew right into the right side of the goal to cut Duncan's lead to 3-1, which was the score at halftime.

With the two-goal lead, the Lady Demons took advantage of a hard foul in the box for their fourth and final goal of the game when the referees called for a penalty kick at the 31:38 mark.

Ramirez put the shot right inside the goal to take the 4-1 lead and cruise on defense for the rest of the game to improve their season record to 4-5 on the year and a 2-1 mark in district play.

It was the final home game of the season. The Lady Demons currently sit in fourth in the district standings and will start the road trip later this week in Lawton.

That game will see the Lady Demons taking on the MacArthur Lady Highlanders, who are 6-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in district play.

Duncan's game at MacArthur will start at 6 p.m. April 6 and will be the final game of the week. The boys game will follow around 8 p.m. on April 6 at MacArthur.

The Demons dropped their first district contest of the season also in the final home game of the year by losing 7-0 to the defending Class 5A State Champions in soccer, Santa Fe South.
