Lady Dogs top Stillwater, drop game in Browning

Feb. 1—Whitefish finally got the ball rolling on the offensive end in a 15-point win over Stillwater Christian last week. But the unbeaten Lady Indians proved to be too much for the Bulldogs on Thursday night in a 54-17 rout.

Tuesday, Jan. 24, Whitefish hosted Stillwater. The Lady Bulldogs played even with the Cougars early on, before building a solid lead in the second half. A breakout game from senior Brooke Roberts, who poured in 21 points, led Whitefish in the game. Bailey Smith added 14 and Jude Perry had nine. Whitefish scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Perry and Rya Hirsch also finished the game with nine rebounds each.

"We came out and played well. Brooke went for 21 points and a few threes and Bailey Smith for 14, so those two really carried us. It was good to see Brooke have a really good game," Whitefish head coach Bob Bolam said.

"We played solid defense and had some big point production so it was nice to see that from the girls," he added.

A few days later, the Northwest A powerhouse Browning put up points early and never let off the gas. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs couldn't get their offense going throughout the game. Smith led the Dogs in scoring with 9 points and Perry had 4 points.

The Lady Indians are undefeated this season and present a tough full-court defense. Browning's Mecca Bullchild led the way for her team with 13 points while nine players scored in the game.

"We started out really slow and never did get any momentum. Browning's a good team and we're suffering from some depth and injury issues," Bolam said.

Whitefish has a thin roster and recent injuries to starters has increased playing time for more inexperienced players off the bench. Bolam hopes the team can heal up and finish out the season strong.

Whitefish prepares for a busy week ahead as the regular season heads into the final three weeks. The Bulldogs were set to play Polson after press time on Tuesday. Then Whitefish will host Ronan on Thursday at 6 p.m. at WHS and head to Cut Bank on Friday.
