Apr. 16—The Washington Hatchets tennis team added a 5-0 win over area foe Loogootee on Thursday at the Lena Dunn tennis courts.

In singles action, WHS game up just six games, with No. 1 Bella Thorne beating Annalise Powell, 6-0, 6-0, No. 2 Alaina Thorne downing Kieragen Napier, 6-2, 6-0, and Kenli Barber defeating Grace Gingerich, 6-2, 6-2.

Both doubles matches went to three sets, as Hatchets Sophia Davis and Sydney Melton defeated Katie Callison and Caitlin Carrico, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Kenzie Knepp and Addy McMurray beat Grace Foddrill and Madison McAtee, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to complete the sweep.

"I am really proud of our team tonight. To be able to win 5-0 against a quality team like Loogootee is always special. I feel like going forward we learned a lot about our team. Sophia and Sydney went three sets and had to work for every point. It was a true team win for those two. Addy and Kenzie also played well with their backs against the wall. There was a point in the third set where one of the games had 15 deuces. Both teams had a refuse to lose attitude. I was happy for the senior team and their confidence going forward. Our singles controlled the tempo against three good players. Bella, Alaina, and Kenli have been solid all week for us," said WHS coach Brian Hancock.

LHS coach Mike Tippery added, "Washington has a solid team from top to bottom. They are not overpowering, but they scratch and claw and make you earn every point. Our doubles teams played well at times. We just need to be a little more consistent to pull out these close matches.

Loogootee took the JV matches 6-2. Washington's Cassie Dillion (W) defeated Abbey Fisher 6-2 and Channey Clark/Molly McClure defeated Zoey Brassine/Linsey England 6-5. Loogootee took the rest of the matches, as Ana Toy defeated Cassie Dillion, 6-1, Toy/Olivia Dant defeated Chloe Browning/Ally Gross, 6-3, Tessa Bradley/Lauren Holt defeated Libby Humerickhouse/Elle Stowers, 6-5, Abbey Fischer/Maddie Fischer defeated Molly Jones/Kaylee McCandless, 6-2, Zoey Brassine/Linsey England defeated Nayali Barco/Canaj Ajradinoska 7-5, and Tessa Bradley/Olivia Dant defeated Abigail Brown/Gwenn Goodwin, 6-2.

Loogootee heads to Bedford on Monday, while WHS travels to Evansville Central on Saturday.
