Lady Vikes lose to Valley

Dec. 1—MONTGOMERY — The Barr-Reeve Lady Vikings posted just eight buckets in their 27-22 loss to Springs Vikings on Tuesday and fell to 1-5.

"We missed a lot of lay ups and missed a lot of shots. You aren't going to win a lot of games scoring about four points in the second half," said B-R coach Lacey Higgins. "We have got to find a way to get more scoring. We will will try again on Friday."

Neither team wasted much time in the opening five minutes as the Vikes got buckets from Hannah Bledsoe, Willow Thompson and Colleen Trambaugh, pushing the Vikes to a 6-6 tie. However, turnovers began to hurt the Vikes and Springs Valley went on a 7-2 run, punctuated with a buzzer trey from Gracie Allstont to make it 16-10 at the end of the first.

Kylee Gladish and Bledsoe collected the next four Viking points to open the second quarter and cut the margin to 12-16. Trambaugh picked up her third basket, but Valley kept the lead at four. Mariah Brunson found the bottom of the net on a put back to make it 16-18, which is how the half would end.

The Lady Hawks stretched the lead back to four early in the third, followed by 3-4 free throws and 23-16 lead. Bledsoe finally got B-R on the board with a basket with 2:43 remaining. She also added a free throw, but B-R was outscored 7-3 during the quarter, and SV went up 25-19 with eight minutes left to play.

The fourth quarter opened with another scoring drought for both teams until Trambaugh hit a trey with 3:30 left in the game. That 3-ball cut it to 22-25 and B-R had a pair of layups, but were unable to convert. Brunson had a big rebound with :40 left, but a turnover led to Jessalyn Mahan making a free throw to push the lead to four, before coming away with the 27-22 final.

B-R was led by Trambaugh with nine, Bledsoe with seven, four from Thompson and two from Brunson. Mahan led Valley with 11.

B-R takes on Pike Central on Friday. There was no JV game played.
