Lafayette Jeff to host Celebration of Special Education event before Friday's game

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Jefferson High School will honor its special education teachers and staff in its first-ever Celebration of Special Education.

The event is designed to honor those teachers and staff who inspire the special education students at Jefferson High School.

"The staff at JHS serves nearly 400 students who have been identified with a learning disability,” said Casey Davenport, Jefferson High School assistant principal.

“Our staff ensures all students receive rigorous instruction in a safe and nurturing environment. I am looking forward to the opportunity to recognize our Special Education Department for all they do to support these students."

Staff will be recognized before the home football game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

As part of the celebration, special education students participated in a T-shirt design contest to create a new logo for the event. The proceeds of the T-shirt sales will go towards the Special Education Department.

The designs were voted on by the entire JHS student body and the winning design was submitted by Jeremy Rodney.

Beyond the event, the celebration will also take place on the same day as the JHS Homecoming festivities. Students will be encouraged to dress up as superheroes, which are associated with Special Olympics.

“Jefferson High School has long had a commitment to providing the highest quality education to all students. Special education students are a group that requires highly trained teachers; those dedicated teachers and paraprofessionals work tirelessly all year long to meet the particular needs of these students. JHS has both a unified track team and a unified bocce ball team; in unified sports, Special Ed students are paired with typical students, who serve as mentors,” the press release reads.
