Lafayette Parish has no F-rated schools for the 1st time since 2017. How did your school do?
The Lafayette Parish School System has no F-rated schools for the first time since 2017 and had 13 A-graded schools — the most the district has had since 2016 — according to data released by the Louisiana Department of Education on Wednesday.
The system overall was graded as a B with a score of 84.8, which was a 3.2-point increase from the simulated 2021 score. The district’s score is actually higher than it was prior to the pandemic, recording a 5.9-point increase, which is tied for the fifth-largest increase of all the state’s districts.
"These outstanding scores are a result of all stakeholders pulling in the same direction for the students we serve," said LPSS Superintendent Irma Trosclair in a release. "I have no doubt that our school system will continue to grow as our dedicated school leaders continue to focus on identifying areas needing improvement. Thank you to parents who entrust their children to us, and to our community and the Lafayette Parish School Board for continuing to support us so that we can provide the resources needed for teachers and students to be successful in the classroom.”
The parish had the 16th highest overall score in the state, up 13 spots from 2019. Twenty-three LPSS schools were recognized as Top Gains Honorees for scoring an A on the progress index. Eleven schools were named Opportunity Honorees for being in the top 10% in serving students with disabilities, English learners or economically-disadvantaged students.
The parish was also one of 20 districts to be scored an A for growth. Sixteen schools in LPSS improved by at least one letter grade. Carencro High School jumped two letter grades, moving from D to B.
“We have faced many challenges over the last few years, but our BEARS remained strong. The dedication and hard work of our teachers and students made this progress possible," Carencro High Principal Vanessa Knott said in a release.
Schools generally saw improvement across the state, with the state’s system rating a B. The scores are now at the same level as before the pandemic, scoring 77.1 in both the 2019 and 2022 school years. In 2021, the state had a simulated score of 75.3, according to LDE.
Louisiana education board votes down controversial school accountability changes
The schools and districts did not receive letter grades based on the simulated scores in 2021. The state has issued school performance scores for public schools since 1999. In 2021, the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education waived its policies on school performance scores and letter grades in 2021, though unofficial results were released showing where the scores would have been during the year.
No schools recorded an F in 2022 in LPSS. Only one school, J.W. Faulk Elementary School, was considered an F school in 2019, but the school improved to a D school in 2022. Only two schools received a D in the parish — Faulk and Alice N. Boucher Elementary School.
Thirteen LPSS schools were graded an A, the most the parish has had since 2016, when it also had 13. Two LPSS schools were given their first letter grades since their opening, with Dr. Raphael A. Baranco Elementary School recording a C and Martial Billeaud Elementary School getting an A.
Early College Academy had the fourth-highest overall score of all the state's public schools.
LPSS is an outlier among the state’s largest school districts. LPSS is the state’s sixth-largest school district based on Feb. 2022 data. Only four of the ten districts with more than 20,000 students were above their pre-pandemic scores, and LPSS had the most growth of all ten of the large districts.
