Lafayette to revamp Columbian Park's playground, expected to be completed by summer

LAFAYETTE, Ind.  — The City of Lafayette will be improving the Subaru of Indiana Automotive playground located in Columbian Park.

The project will revamp the upper portion of the existing playground originally completed in fall 1999.

The revamped area will be approximately 5,400 square feet and feature poured-in-place rubber surfacing for increased mobility access, three climbing towers that are each approximately 24 feet tall, a “RopeVenture Revolv” climber, rope bridge, interactive panels, tunnels, and six slides, according to a city press release.

New additions to the playground area also will include four overhead shade sails to shield visitors from the sun, hillside slides, three hillside climbers, and six slides that will allow visitors a fun way to get from the upper level to the lower level of the playground.

“We are very excited to announce the significant investment being made to the Columbian Park playground,” said Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski in the press release.

“So many children and adults have enjoyed the existing playground for many years thanks to our partnership with SIA. As we continue to invest in our public spaces for a better quality of life and higher standard of living for Lafayette, these new improvements will enhance a new experience for all ages when they visit the park.”

The renovations to the park are expected to be completed by this summer.

“The new components will transform, refresh and reenergize the playground, making certain that this area remains a vibrant community destination for many years to come,” said Claudine Laufman, superintendent of the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department.

The improvements to the park will be funded through Tax Increment Financing. The playground equipment was designed by BCI Burke Company, LLC and will be installed by Snider Recreation, Inc.

While the upper portion of the playground is under construction, the lower portion of the park will remain open.
