Lafayette Roller Derby begins 2023 season Saturday
LAFAYETTE, Ind. − Skittles McBoom, Manic Mandy and a stream of other competitive characters will usher in the 2023 Lafayette Roller Derby season, which begins Saturday at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds.
Saturday's bout will be against the Illiana Derby Dames from Lynwood, Illinois.
"Coming back to active skating after a 3-year hiatus — thanks pandemic — has been both exhilarating and terrifying," Skittles McBoom stated in a release. "I can’t wait to see the fans and see what roller derby has in store for me this season. Looks like I’ll be making them taste the rainbow real soon.”
Home games will take place April 29, June 10, Sept. 23 and Oct. 7 at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. At each of these, People's Brewery and EMT food truck will be available for guests. Merchandise will also be available for both home and visiting teams. A portion of ticket sales will go towards Pride Lafayette, the charity Lafayette Roller Derby has selected to support this season.
“The excitement of roller derby is infectious-we love being on the track, playing together as a team," said Manic Mandy, in the release. " Come be a part of the crowd cheering on our jammers as they break through the pack!”
Lafayette Roller Derby is looking for new members. No prior experience is necessary and anyone "with a commitment to leadership, empowerment, camaraderie and athleticism" is invited to join.
According to the release, women and gender-expansive adults are welcome to skate competitively. Official and volunteer positions are also available to all adults.
Tickets are available online at Lafayette Roller Derby's Square website. Tickets are $12 at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the whistle blows at 7 p.m. Learn more about Lafayette Roller Derby on the group's Facebook page.
