Lagarde retains Terrebonne School Board seat; south Lafourche voters renew veterans tax

Michael Lagarde retained his seat on the Terrebonne Parish School Board, and south Lafourche voters renewed a property tax that supports the area's veterans.

The two were the only strictly local elections Saturday in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.

Voters statewide as well as locally approved three amendments to the Louisiana Constitution by wide margins.

In the local races:

Terrebonne School Board

Lagarde, a Democrat serving his first four-year term, defeated Republican Allison Cressoine Gill in a runoff election for the District 1 School Board seat.

The district includes parts of east and central Houma. Lagarde received 404 votes (72%) to Cressione Gill's 155 (28%). About 9.8% of the district's 5,720 voters cast ballots in the election.

Largarde's win leaves the board with eight incumbents and one newcomer when members begin their new terms Jan. 1. The board has seven Republicans and two Democrats.

All other School Board races in Terrebonne and Lafourche were decided in the Nov. 8 elections.

South Lafourche veterans tax

Voters in south Lafourche's Ward 10 renewed a .98-mill property tax that raises about $530,000 a year for the area's veterans park. The Veterans District also uses the money to provide services such as transportation for veterans who need medical treatment. If approved, the tax would run through 2033.

The tax passed by a vote of 781 (86%) to 126 (14%) against. About 7.9% of the district's 11,533 voters cast ballots in the election.
