On Deck: The winner will play the winner of Cardinal Mooney and Chagrin Falls in a district final at Salem on March 3 at 7 p.m.
For the record: These two schools are very familiar with each other and now play for a spot in the district final. Lake Catholic features the 1-2 scoring punch of senior Aidan Fitzgerald and junior Peyton Budrys-Rini (17.8 PPG). Both have the ability to pull up from beyond the arc or off the drive. While they can score in bunches, the edge for the Cougars is their size over Kirtland. The trio of Dylan Wimbs (6.1 RPG), Fitzgerald (5.8 RPG) and Cross Nimmo (4.9) stand 6-foot-3 or taller and will look to control the glass. ... While Kirtland dosen't have a player score at the pace of the Cougar duo, they do have a strong range of scorers on their sideline as four players averaged seven points or more. Vince Carriero is both the lead scorer (9.7 PPG) but also their floor general with 2.8 assists per game. The Hornets do have some players that score off the drive but where they make their mark is beyond the arc. Nick Barisic leads the way with 31 threes with Owen Mueller and Carriero not far behind. If they want to spoil the season of their crosstown rivals, they will need to get off to a better shooting start than they did against Berkshire.
Hercik's pick: Lake Catholic
