Jun. 23—The unoccupied seat on the Board of Lake County commissioners is no more, as Mark A. Tyler was sworn in June 23 during the body's regular meeting in Painesville.

Tyler — who served as mayor of Kirtland from 2007 to 2015 and as councilperson-at-large from 2001 to 2007— was appointed to the position, per Ohio Revised Code, by the Lake County Republican Party Central Committee June 16, ending a 43-day vacancy.

The 64-year-old succeeds Ron Young, who chose not to seek re-election and subsequently announced his retirement on April 28.

Young held the seat since 2019. His last day was May 4.

Tyler will fill the seat for the remainder of the term, which runs through the end of the year.

Democratic candidate Adam Dudziak and current Commissioner John Plecnik will face off for the four-year position in the November 2022 General Election.

Willowick Mayor Richard Regovich — who defeated Morris Beverage III in the GOP race for the unexpired seat Plecnik holds, following the May 3 Primary Election — will face Democratic opponent Maureen Kelly on Nov. 8.

The unexpired term runs through Jan. 1, 2025.

Tyler, a retired engineer who worked for The Lubrizol Corp., becomes the 80th Lake County commissioner in the board's 180-year history.

"I'm looking forward to working with both commissioners, whom I know personally, fortunately, and they've really reached out and supported me," he said. "It certainly helps having been in public office before. It was a great experience and I learned a lot.

"This came very quickly and the staff's been incredible, so I'm very excited about this opportunity to serve the citizens of Lake County."
