Lake County Council on Aging hosting pet food drives

Oct. 27—To promote its "Pet Meals on Wheels" program, the Lake County Council on Aging will be hosting two pet food donation drives in collaboration with Pet Supplies Plus.

The first "Meow or Woof Pet Meals on Wheels" event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at 30450 Lake Shore Blvd. in Willowick.

The second event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at 34821 Euclid Ave. in Willoughby.

The program provides a supplemental supply of pet food delivered to seniors by Lake County Council on Aging volunteers once a month.

"In our home-delivered-meal experience, we found that seniors with pets often have to stretch their dollars and make difficult choices to feed their pet and themselves," Council Director of Community Services Linda Llewellyn.

"Less of their nutritious meals and less money available for groceries can have a negative impact, so we partnered with Lake Humane Society's Auggie's Pantry Program and created the Meow or Woof program to enhance the nutrition and well-being of seniors and their pets."

According to Council, for a senior who lives alone, pets provide motivation to be up in the morning and to keep a schedule.

Moreover, pets enhance seniors' sense of joy in their lives, as they are regarded as family.

Pet food for cats and dogs can be donated at both Pet Supplies Plus locations.

Canned and dry food and cash or check donations are welcome.

According to officials, every bag of pet food will benefit over 75 seniors and 130 pets.
