Lake Huron Medical Center has new mammography technology

Lake Huron Medical Center is offering a new breast imaging system to deliver mammograms in 3D.

Lake Huron Medical Center is advancing on the fight against breast cancer with the purchase and installation of MAMMOMAT Revelation, an innovative mammography system designed to overcome barriers in breast cancer detection and compliance. The new system offers 3D wide-angle breast imagining for early breast cancer detection. It allows doctors to see more while screening and is designed to make the exams more comfortable.

Director of Radiology and Cariology Services Rachel Friedsberg said in a press release that Lake Huron Medical Center chose MAMMOMAT Revelation because the wide-angle technology makes it easier to find smaller lesions earlier than with 2D mammography, and with greater accuracy.

"We also see the system’s personalized compression as a tool that helps women overcome the fear of pain and discomfort that is so common with mammograms by delivering a more comfortable examination," Friedsberg said.

MAMMOMAT Revelation is from Siemens Healthineers. The system's image acquisitions angle of 50 degrees provides the widest depth resolution in the market. It results in high-quality 3D images that gives doctors more information that helps them make more confident diagnoses.

The system is also the first mammography platform to provide automated breast density measurements at examination. High breast density can increase the risk of developing cancer. Currently, breast density is estimated visually during the image reading process, which usually happens after the patient leaves.

With MAMMOMAT Revelation, this information is received during the breast exam, which enables immediate and personalized risk assessments, and allows Lake Huron Medical Center to provide supplemental imagining while the patient is still present.

Compression is key to getting an accurate mammogram, but the associate discomfort and pain are reasons women avoid the exams. MAMMOMAT Revelation has a personalized compression system, which gives the exact amount of compression for a woman's breast type. The force is automatically adjusted for individual comfort without losing accuracy.

"It was important for us to remove any barrier that could stop a woman from getting the screening she needs," Friedsberg said.

Lake Huron Medical Center CEO Jose Kottoor in the via press release that the center is thrilled to bring this technology to St. Clair County.

"When breast cancer is found early, the chances of survival are greatly improved," he said. "MAMMOMAT Revelation is the best system to provide quality images and patient experience to make early detection possible."

In addition to the new mammography system, Lake Huron Medical Center is also offering free mammograms to uninsured women for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place during October.
