SAULT STE. MARIE — Nearly 400 students became alumni at the 61st annual Lake Superior State University graduation ceremony on Saturday.

On May 6, 341 LSSU students celebrated their graduation and prepared to join the workforce, and thousands of family and friends gathered at Taffy Abel Arena to celebrate the big day.

The ceremony was introduced by Interim University President Lynn Gillette, who presented degrees and introduced the keynote speaker.

"To stand up here and shake the hand of every student as they come by and see the look on their face as they appreciate what they accomplished, it's a very special thing and I appreciate that I'm a part of it," said Gillette.

Whitney Gravelle, chairperson of the Bay Mills Indian Community, was the keynote speaker. She gave words of encouragement and advice to the graduating students. Gravelle spoke to students about the importance of being supported, and the people that helped them reach this point.

Gravelle also told students that their goals were within reach, as long as they remembered the work they've already done to reach their passions, and encouraged them to walk into the future unafraid.

"For years you have dedicated yourself to growing and pursuing your dream. Today you may be feeling excitement, pride, gratitude and perhaps even apprehension," said Gravelle. "No matter where you go, remember to hold on to what LSSU has provided you, and know that you have the knowledge, skills and experience to face it."

Graduating student speaker Hannah Brood, who earned bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and robotics engineering, also spoke to the graduating class.

Brood studied robotics and engineering at LSSU and participated in multiple international robotics competitions. Brood spoke about how she always felt supported in her college career, and that in the difficult moments of her studies she was thankful for the support she found in religion, but also in other people.

"There are the people that have encouraged me, who have challenged me to do my best and who have consistently believed that I can do it, even when I don't believe in myself," said Brood. "Those of you who have made me laugh, who have taken notes on my many questions, and to have patiently dealt with the highs and lows of my life as a sleep deprived college student, you all are the reason why I am here today."
