Lake Superior State University hosts annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony
SAULT STE. MARIE — Hundreds of flags lined the walkways of the Lake Superior State University campus on Monday, as students and community members alike remembered a sad day in American history.
On Monday, Sept. 11, the university hosted its annual commemoration of 9/11. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.
LSSU Interim President Lynn G. Gillette spoke to the crowd of students, firefighters and other first responders about the importance of remembering such events. He also shared his personal memories from Sept. 11, 2001.
"Many of us remember exactly where we were and exactly what we were doing when the attacks happened. Most of you students were either too young to remember or not yet alive when the attacks happened, which makes it even more important that we do remember what happened," said Gillette.
Other speakers also shared their own thoughts and feelings about the day, and commemorated the lives lost.
"It is critical to continue to remember the reasons why did this happen, and to honor the sacrifice of so many who were courageous that day, and in the immediate following days," said Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Don Gerrie.
The ceremony included a Color Guard presentation and the placing of three wreaths to remember the three places where people lost their lives on that day.
