SAULT STE. MARIE — On Aug. 22, Lake Superior State University opened its doors for the 2022-23 school year.

Students moved in the week prior and celebrated on campus with the annual Laker Week events, which ended on Saturday Aug. 27 with Lakerpalooza.

Incoming freshman Mackenzie Bergman, studying cannabis science, said she's excited to start new in-person classes at LSSU.

"I'm excited for classes that I'm personally interested in, that's for sure because I did horrible in high school because I didn't enjoy the classes," said Bergman. "I’m really excited for my biology class because I enjoy looking at things under a microscope, I think the small world is so cool."

Bergman said she hopes to use her degree in cannabis science to help people by creating medical marijuana.

"My grandma had cancer and she used cannabis quite a bit for all of her symptoms and side effects," said Bergman. "So I really just wanted to help other people and so I found out that this was one of the best cannabis chemistry programs in the country, so I'm gonna do that for her."

Other incoming freshman, such as Cammie Dawson, studying elementary education, are excited to experience other parts of college life, such as sports and clubs.

"I’m excited for the hockey games, I’m also ready for basketball season to start up," said Dawson.

"I joined the photography club in Laker Week," Dawson added. "I also might join the ice skating club where they help people who aren’t as good at it."

Another freshman on campus is Ashley Oneler, who is studying for a degree in criminal justice. She already has a favorite spot on campus.

"My favorite part of campus so far is across the art center, there are tree stumps where me and my friends go to watch the sunset. It’s so pretty (and) sometimes random people will join us to watch it," said Oneler. "We've only been here a few weeks and I'm excited to see how the school year goes."
