LAKE TWP. – The township is one step closer to having a Meijer store at 900 Edison St. NW outside of Hartville.

A proposed plan for Meijer to build a grocery store across from the Hartville MarketPlace was recommended for conditional approval at Tuesday’s Stark County Regional Planning Commission meeting.

“A conditional use permit will be required for the pharmacy drive-thru,” Lake Township Zoning Administrator Nicole Wilkinson said. “Variances must be applied for through the Board of Zoning Appeals for minimum parking spaces, size of parking stalls and signage.”

Regional planner Fulton Benya said the conditional approval is good for two years. If the company doesn't work through the conditions in that time, it is able to renew or resubmit the project. It is unclear when the company wants to construct.

“Many agencies had conditions, so they’ll work through those conditions with those agencies as well as us because we had some, as well,” Benya said.

This store would be the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company's fourth for Stark County, with one open in Jackson Township and others planned for Alliance and North Canton.

Meijer, a privately and family-owned company, didn't respond to a request for comment. The company operates more than 500 supercenters, neighborhood markets, Meijer Grocery and Express locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Proposed plan for Lake Township Meijer store

The proposed Meijer plan, on the opposite side of the road as the Hartville MarketPlace, includes about 13.9 acres of land, with the main store occupying 89,988 square feet. There are also plans for a drive-up pharmacy, electric vehicle charging, grocery pickup parking and quick-trip parking.

“We are proposing a Meijer supercenter in Alliance and North Canton and believe that this location will complement these two,” Meijer Senior Real Estate Manager Chris Jones wrote in the project description submitted to Regional Planning. “This will be a grocery store only and will employ approximately 100 people.”

The proposed plan, which includes two entries, also includes adding a traffic light at the main entrance, across from the entrance to the Hartville Kitchen.
