San Angelo Lake View’s Derrick Taylor came within one-hundredth of a second of qualifying for the UIL State Track and Field Championships.

The junior finished third in the boys 200-meter run at the Region I-4A Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Lubbock’s Lowrey Field with a time of 22.17 seconds.

The top two finishers in each event at the regional level automatically qualify for state — for a total of eight entries — but there is a ninth at-large berth to the state meet that is awarded to the best mark among the third-place finishers in the four regions.

Taylor’s time was .01 slower than that of the wildcard winner, who finished in a time of 22.16.

Taylor also ran on Lake View’s fourth-place 4x200 relay (1:29.61) and fifth-place 4x400 relay (3:26.71).

He was joined by Brandon Durio, Devyn Paz and Brandon Cruz on the two relays.

Taylor was also seventh in the boys high jump (5-10).

At the Region I-6A meet at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, San Angelo Central senior Payton Mayberry also came close to a state-meet berth, finishing third in the girls triple jump.

Mayberry jumped 37-6 ¾ to claim the bronze medal but was unable to earn the wildcard.

Jacob English won a jump-off to finish in fifth place in the boys high jump for Central. He cleared 6-4.

Raven Ortiz was seventh in the boys long jump (22-6).

The team of Ortiz, Jordan Weatherspoon, Cole McWilliams and Tyler Hill were sixth in the 4x200 relay (1:27.89.)
