Lakeland Community College to host Freedom Day celebration

Jun. 28—Lakeland Community College's Diversity Committee is hosting a community celebration to mark "Freedom Day" from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on June 30 at the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center.

The free event at the Kirtland-based campus is open to the public and will feature a lineup of local singers, dancers, poets, and spoken word, and visual artists in honor of the history of Juneteenth.

Nehemiah Spencer, a professional dancer and choreographer, who graduated from the Cleveland School of the Arts, will be joined by additional performers from the Cleveland area, including Siaara Freeman, current poet laureate of Cleveland Heights and University Heights, and Courtney Hamlett, who teaches visual arts at the Northwest School of the Arts, and Reflections Dance Theater, founded by Spencer.

According to officials, the Diversity Committee plays a key role in "administering programs and addressing challenges, and serves to advise the president of the college regarding diversity and equal opportunity issues, in addition to facilitating programs and services that meet the changing needs of individuals in a diverse community."

The committee's responsibilities include "identifying the strengths, resources, and needs of the college in matters of diversity, recommending proactive activities, developing, endorsing and funding programs, and fostering equal opportunities."
