LAKELAND — A newly installed waterline failed Monday morning, washing out the southeast corner of Wabash Avenue and 10th Street in Northwest Lakeland.

Lakeland's Water Utilities department shut off water to the area, according to Lakeland spokesman Kevin Cook, but service has been maintained. No customers were left without water.

Temporary traffic control measures have been put in place until. No further information on traffic impacts was immediately available.

The waterline was part of a larger $5.1 million project that was finished in April, according to Cook. The project created a two-lane roadway, six-foot sidewalks on both sides of the street, a new railroad crossing and stormwater drainage system. The intersection of Wabash and 10th street was improved with the addition of a traffic signal.

It is not immediately clear why the waterline failed. The city's crews were sent out to site to assess the situation early Monday morning.

The work done at Wabash Avenue and 10th Street is under warranty with COBB Construction, the contractor that installed the line.
