LAKELAND— A 49-year-old Lakeland woman died in a collision with a semi-truck Tuesday morning, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The agency said deputies responded to the crash at 10:15 a.m. on U.S. 98 north of Lakeland, about a mile north of Rockridge Road where the highway is two lanes.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Sheriff's Office said 49-year-old Angela McDaniel of Lakeland was driving a silver 2001 Honda Accord southbound on U.S. 98 when, for unknown reasons, the Honda entered the northbound lane into the path of a semi-truck.

The 2019 Volvo semi-truck and trailer driven by 28-year-old Tyler Palmer of Irmo, South Carolina, hit McDaniel's Honda, causing the Honda to spin and stop on the west shoulder of the road. The semi-truck slid across the southbound lane, went into the woods and hit several trees, according to the release.

Officials said McDaniel died at the scene and Palmer was uninjured.

Witnesses told detectives that McDaniel's car drifted across the center line and the fog line multiple times over several miles before the crash.

The road was closed for four hours.
