Lakeland women's basketball advances in district play; men's team eliminated

Mar. 10—The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team advanced to the Division II Great Lakes District A final with a 69-66 win over Schoolcraft on March 9 at Mott Community College.

The Lakers play in the district final vs. Mid Michigan on March 11 at 3 p.m. at Mott.

Lakeland (22-3) opened the game with a 10-0 run and led, 27-11, after the first quarter and 36-24 at the break.

Schoolcraft made a big second-half rally and led, 49-47, and then 64-61 with two minutes to play. Madison Fueger's layup from Mentor grad Gianna Pegoraro with 24.4 seconds to play was the difference and gave the Lakers a 65-64 lead. Free throws by Lakeland closed out the victory.

Fueger led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Pegoraro had 17 points and six rebounds and Zion Fussell added 14 rebounds and three rebounds.

On the men's side, the Lakers lost at host Mott on March 10, 82-67, in a Great Lakes District A semifinal.

Lakeland (22-6) trailed at halftime, 37-28, but rallied in the second half to take a 38-37 lead. Mott answered with a 6-0 run to lead 43-38 and carried that momentum to victory.

Jaidon Lipscomb led the Lakers with 28 points with Zach Wartley added 12 and Landon Tillman 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
