Longtime Loudonville-Perrysville teacher dies in head-on crash in Holmes County

WASHINGTON TWP. ‒ A longtime teacher at Loudonville-Perrysville Exempted Village School District died Friday morning in a head-on crash on state Route 3 near County Road 22.

Elaine Mikus, 77, of the Lakeville area was killed in the 7:45 a.m. crash, according to a news release from the Wooster Post of the State Highway Patrol.

The Patrol said its investigation found:

Mikus was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickup south on Route 3 when she lost control and the truck went across the center line as it traveled up a hill. A 2015 Dodge Ram going downhill in the northbound lane struck the Silverado’s left front section. Both vehicles stopped in the middle of the road, forcing the temporary closure of Route 3.

Mikus was wearing her seat belt and her airbags deployed, according to the patrol.

The 60-year-old Loudonville man driving the Dodge Ram and his passenger, a 36-year-old Loudonville man, were treated at the scene for suspected minor injuries. Both men wore seat belts and their airbags also deployed.

School district to have support available to students and staff

In a message to Redbird Nation from Superintendent Catherine Puster, she said the district would provide additional support on Monday and Tuesday for students and staff.

"Throughout her 22 years of service," Puster wrote in the message, "Elaine touched the lives of countless students and staff. She was a pillar of our Redbird community and her positive impact on the district will be felt for years to come. ... This is a loss that will be felt across the district and community."

Puster's message is posted on the district's website.

Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Finney’s Marathon Towing of Millersburg. Loudonville and Western Holmes Fire and EMS personnel as well as the Ohio Department of Transportation helped at the scene.
