Lakewood man indicted in deadly road-rage crash that killed Brick man

TOMS RIVER — A 20-year-old Lakewood man has been indicted on charges of death by auto and assault in a 2021 road-rage accident that claimed the life of a 26-year-old Brick man and injured another motorist, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

An Ocean County grand jury handed up an indictment charging Avrohom Pam in the death of Sean Avon. The indictment also charged Pam with assault by auto on John Arendt Jr., 73, of Brick.

An argument between Pam and Arendt preceded the three-vehicle accident that claimed the life of Avon, an investigation revealed. The investigation concluded Pam’s reckless driving was the cause of the crash, authorities allege.

The accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. on June 11, 2021 in the area of Lanes Mills Road in Lakewood.

The investigation by the prosecutor’s Vehicular Homicide Squad, Lakewood police and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Pam was driving a 2021 Ford van in the rightmost lane of Lanes Mills Road in Lakewood when he struck a 2019 Honda CR-V driven by Arendt, Billhimer said in a news release. The force of the collision propelled Arendt’s vehicle into the northbound lane, where it struck Avon’s 2012 Ford Mustang head-on, the prosecutor said.

Avon succumbed to his injuries at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Arendt was treated for injuries at Jersey Shore University Medical in Neptune and released.

Pam remained on the scene and did not require medical attention.

Pam was arrested and charged in the case the following day. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail and later released under New Jersey’s bail reform law.

Pam will face an arraignment on the charges in the coming weeks.
