Lamar Sperling, Natalie Shimmel lead Hoban to football, soccer wins

FOOTBALL

Archbishop Hoban 43, Iona Prep (New York) 14

Senior Lamar Sperling ran for 241 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries on Saturday to lead the host Knights (3-0) to a win over the Gaels (0-1) at Dowed Field.

The matchup featured teams with championship pedigree.

Iona Prep won the New York Catholic High School Football League Class AAA state championship last year.

Hoban won Ohio Division III state championships in 2015 and 2016, Division II state titles in 2017, 2018 and 2020 and was the Division II state runner-up in 2021.

Iona Prep built a 14-7 lead with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter, but Hoban rallied to even the score at 14-14 by halftime en route to scoring the final 36 points.

Iona Prep senior Ajani Sheppard had a hand in two first-half touchdowns. Sheppard threw a 64-yard TD pass to senior Isaiah Bennett on the first offensive play of the game and added a 55-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Sperling scored on a 34-yard TD run in the first quarter and junior quarterback JacQai Long threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior Jalen Hightower in the second quarter.

Hoban scored 26 points in the third quarter with touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. Sperling scored on a 45-yard TD run and an 89-yard TD run. Senior Jayvian Crable forced a fumble that junior Cartier Williams recovered and ran 40-yards for a TD, junior Tysen Campbell returned a punt 38-yards for a TD and junior Ryan Burns made a 37-yard field goal.

Long completed 9-of-12 passes for 105 yards, Burns made 4-of-6 extra point kicks and junior Xavier Williams contributed an interception to quell a Iona Prep drive.

Mentor Lake Catholic 21, Buchtel 7

Frankie Trinetti threw two touchdown passes to guide the Cougars past the Griffins. Trinetti tossed a 9-yard TD pass to Ace Peterlin and a 14-yard TD pass to Aidan Fitzgerald. MLC's Jimmy Rhodes added a 7 yard TD run.

Natalie Shimmel scored two goals and Lauren Mahoney contributed one goal to lead the Knights to a victory.

Addison Blair scored a goal a for WJ and Margaret Soehnlen netted Jackson's goal.

BOYS SOCCER

Hudson 3, Medina 2

Tyler Travis scored two goals and Noah Zappone added one goal to lead the visiting Explorers (3-1-1) past the Bees (2-2-2). Medina's Evan Kotick and Cole Turchyn each scored a goal.

Hudson and Medina finished even in shots on goal (7-7) and corner kicks (5-5).

Archbishop Hoban 2, Brecksville 2

Hoban’s Ron Watford and Jared Bendo scored one goal apiece and Brecksville’s Owen Lumpkin and Nasyl Prokopin each netted a goal.

Brunswick 3, Copley 2

Ryan Horner, Josh Lord and Evan Horner scored goals to lead the Blue Devils to a win. Landon Antal scored two goals for Copley.

The match also served as a fundrasier to support people and families affected by ALS and Multiple Myeloma.

VOLLEYBALL

Tallmadge 25-16-25-25, Perry 16-25-15-19

Zoe Rensel spiked down 14 kills and Hannah Eyre had five blocks to lead Tallmadge at the net. Tallmadge’s other leaders were Lexi Gray (29 assists), Maya Dexter (28 digs) and Ella Bee (three service aces).

Aurora 25-25-27-22-15, North Ridgeville 22-19-29-25-11

Ollie Salgado totaled 52 assists and three aces to guide Aurora to a victory. Aurora’s other leaders were Brooke Gecina (21 kills), Mia Devine (four blocks) and Emerson Spiesz (24 digs).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Ashley White Invitational

For the second consecutive week the St. Vincent-St. Mary girls cross country team claimed a meet title, winning Saturday's Ashley White Invitational at Marlington High School. Senior Olivia Kindbom finished second individually to lead three Irish runners into the top 10. St. Vincent-St. Mary tallied 56 points to win the Division II-III team crown; Tallmadge was third. In the Division I race, GlenOak behind Nora Salem's winning time 20:12.7 took the team title.

Mentor Cardinal Classic

Junior Mia Heine ran the Garfield Park course in a fourth-place time of 19:16.14 to lead Medina to the girls team title on Saturday. Cara Razavi (19:28.32) and Alexis Warnement (19:45.86) helped the Bees by finishing seventh and 10th. Julia Isham of Strongsville had the best invidiual time of 17:58.89 as the Mustangs finished in sixth place.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Ashley White Invitational

GlenOak took half of the top 10 individual finishers at Marlington on Saturday to win the boys Division I team title, three points ahead of North Canton Hoover. Marlington won the Division II-III team race as Colin Cernansky, Nash Mino and Michael Nicholls finished 1-2-3 as the Dukes tallied 28 points. CVCA was second with 70 points, followed by Tallmadge (136) and STVM (137).

Mentor Cardinal Classic

Medina won the 25-team crown Saturday at Mentor's Garfield Park paced by Andrew Bugner's fifth-place time of 16:24.33.
